Thank you, Measina Treasures of Samoa, for continuing to support me as a Samoan author! "Maka and the Impossible" is the first children story that I ever self-published.
I remember writing original stories in elementary school, and teachers used to tell my mom that she should publish them. I wonder whatever happened to those stories? My family moved a lot because my parents bought and rented homes. So maybe my childhood stories got lost in the shuffle. As a first-generation American, I was put on a path toward higher education and linear studies. My dad is from American Samoa, and my mom is from the Kingdom of Tonga. Their American dream was for me to travel beyond our family's accomplishments and travel beyond our community's circumstances. Prior to drafting this children story, I graduated from University of Hawai'i as a first-generation college graduate in my immediate family. Reflecting on this milestone, I visualized this parable of a little rock with a big dream. A little rock that grew up in a village of other rocks. That had a dream to travel up a hill. With no mobility, how could this dream come true? Find out for yourself, and read my story!
